The Brecon Beacons Workshop

Best Time of Year: Late Summer and Autumn (August to November).

Group Bookings: If you are a group of 2 or 3 people, please get in touch to arrange a date that suits you.

The Course: This is a weekend workshop designed to improve your own photographic skills, vision and style. There will be excursions to a variety of locations in the National Park, each offering different subjects to photograph. I'll be on hand to give individual guidance in the field and as the group size will be limited to 3 guests, there will be plenty of "one to one" time. There will also be tutorials and demonstrations to help improve your understanding of composition and light.

The Area: The Brecon Beacons National Park is simply stunning. There are three distinct areas: The Black Mountain in the west, The Brecon Beacons in the centre and (somewhat confusingly) The Black Mountains in the east. From the mountain tops there are incredible views over the glacially sculpted cirques while in the valleys, there are stunning woodland waterfalls, an ideal place to photograph in the rain.

Example Itinerary:

Day 1

13:00 - Meet at pre-arranged location for afternoon shoot. If it's raining or overcast, we'll explore the waterfalls of the Nedd and Mellte valleys. If it's clear, we'll aim to get on the mountain tops for sunset.
13:30 - Depart for afternoon shoot.
15:00 - Afternoon/Sunset shoot including a field demonstration on composition.
18:00 - Return to car park and arrange time and location for morning shoot the next day.

Day 2

07:15 - Meet at your accommodation or pre-arranged location for the morning shoot.
08:15 - Morning shoot including field demonstration: "Using the Light"
09:00 - Breakfast/Coffee Break.
10:00 - Depending on the weather, we can either proceed to another location for more photography or seek refuge in a cafe/pub for a hot drink and a photoshop demonstration on my laptop.
12:00 - Workshop finishes

Accommodation: As this is a weekend course, you will no doubt want to make your own accommodation choices i.e. levels of luxury and whether to make a long weekend of it etc, so I'll leave that to you. There are several accommodation options to cater for all budgets. This tourist information website may be helpful:

Breakfast: If there is one drawback to the otherwise noble art of landscape photography, it is that it requires you to be out working at the exact time that most normal people are sitting down to breakfast. There are a few options open to us depending on the weather: If it is fine, you'll no doubt want to get out early to photograph in the good light in which case, I'll pack a bag full of croissants and a couple of thermos flasks for hot drinks and we can have breakfast in the field while we work. If it is raining however, we'll probably be visiting the woods and there's no need to rush out, so you can have a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation and we can arrange to meet a little later on.

Brecon Beacons

Cost: 1 Person = £190, 2 People = £260, 3 People = £330 (discount applies to groups all booking for the same course on the same day. Single bookings may occasionally be joined by another single or double booking but the group size will never exceed 3 people). This includes the following:

Transport for the day
Breakfast in the field if sunny

...but excludes the following...

Transport to and from the workshop

What to bring:

Camera equipment. Bring whatever you use, be it film or digital. You will get more out of the workshop if you are familiar with your own equipment, though if you have any queries about your equipment, I'll do my best to help. The only other essential piece of kit for landscape photography is a tripod.
All weather clothing. We cannot control the weather but I believe there is always a good shot to be had, whatever the weather. If it is pouring with rain, we may not be spending as much time outdoors but we'll certainly be popping out for a couple of shoots so it is important to make yourselves comfortable and to keep your camera dry. Bring an umbrella or thick plastic bag for your camera. Walking boots are highly recommended as we'll be walking a fairly long way if the weather is good. You may also want to pack wellies as we'll be exploring streams and rivers if it rains.
