A small coastal garden in south Devon designed by Clare Shaw, senior designer at Matthew Childs Design. Clare collaborated with Barc Architects, who were reviving the house (a 1970’s bungalow), to design a garden that related to the house and felt appropriate in its coastal setting. The garden is south-west facing and in an elevated position on a cliff overlooking a beach, so can be quite exposed to wind. The planting is robust and drought tolerant in a soft palette of blues, yellows and grey-greens, very much complementing the seaside views that the garden enjoys. The garden build won a BALI award and the house and garden project has been shortlisted for a RIBA award.
Clare is also the owner of this garden and she is very happy to be interviewed by a writer and/or welcome a writer to visit the garden. The garden is private and doesn’t open to the public.
This garden has not featured in the press before, though the house revival did feature in Build It magazine recently. There is no specific writer linked to this photo set. The only conditions agreed with the owners are that the specific location of the garden is not revealed. The owners have no plans to move any time soon.
